Jewellery valuation: appraisal service

Jewellery expert with a client

Osprey offers its customers an appraisal service for jewellery, silverware, precious stones, semi-precious stones and coins (Napoleons, Louis d’or, gold 20 dollars). If you need to know the real value of a piece of jewellery, whether recent or old, you can count on our experience.

Our Jewellery appraisals

We carry out four types of appraisals:

  • Appraisals to insure your jewellery
  • Appraisals for a donation
  • Appraisals in the context of a deceased estate or division
  • Appraisals for your tax declarations

What does a jewellery appraisal entail?

For each of our jewellery estimates, our expert will provide you with a detailed description, which will include:

  • The designation of the jewel (example: necklace, bracelet, etc.)

  • A detailed description which will indicate the shape of the jewel, its weight, the number of stones, the size…

  • The state of conservation of the piece as well as its origin

  • The hallmark of the metal, the hallmark of the maker, the hallmark of the jeweller who made the jewel (Ex: eagle’s head for 750 gold, an owl for imported or second-hand jewellery, etc.)

  • The authenticity of the piece (Ex: Jewel from the Napoleon III period or imitation Napoleon III from the 1950s)

  • A photo of the jewellery

Particular attention will be paid to the precious stones. The expert will note the dimensions and will thus be able to calculate the theoretical weight if the stone is mounted.

For diamonds, the 4Cs will be indicated: carat, cut (brilliant, pear etc.), clarity and colour.

In the case of a diamond mounted on a ring, the dimensions will be noted. Our expert can then calculate the estimated weight of the stone. In some cases (natural pearls and treatment research on coloured stones) an additional gemological examination may be necessary. Thanks to this description, a value will be assigned to each of your precious assets whilst specifying the methodology used to do this work.

What is the cost of an expertise?

In many cases, it works out to around 5% of the total estimated amount, or in some cases an hourly rate can be negotiated.
