Follis of Michael II
Follis of Michael II (821-829) in bronze. Michael II, the begue, born in Amlorium in Phrygia was the favorite of Leo the Armenian, who made him a patrician. Accused of having conspired he was thrown into prison, but the emereur having been assassinated, he left his prison to ascend the throne in 820. Cruel towards the Orthodox and cowardly towards the external enemy, he allowed himself to be kidnapped by the Asrrasins.
