Magnificent Belle Époque brooch in platinum gold and diamonds. The pin is in yellow gold. This brooch can also be worn as a necklace with its platinum chain. The eight main diamonds are about 3.2 carats in total, there are 76 other pink and brilliant diamonds for at least 1.5 carats more. The eight largest diamonds weigh a total of around 3.2 carats while the 76 smaller rose-cut and brilliant-cut diamonds weight over 1.5 carats. For most of history, diamonds were set in yellow gold or silver, however as silver is a soft metal, the settings had to be quite chunky and solid, and this detracted from the aspect of the jewel. Around 1900, platinum burst its way onto the jewellery market and led to a revolution in fine, airy designs that let the diamonds be freed from the obscurity of their settings.
