Victim of it’s success, this book is no longer available as we are waiting for a 2nd printing.
The fruit of this incredible undertaking, this corpus is structured around two volumes: a dictionary and an index. The dictionary contains approximately 40,000 entries for jewellers, goldsmiths, silversmiths-gilders, chasers and creators… and is accompanied by the description of 25,000 maker’s marks, of which 9,000 are reproduced in the form of drawings made on a stylised basis. The second volume offers an index, allowing to find the craftsmen of the first volume from the description of their maker’s mark.
The publication of this book is an event, both in terms of its content and its ambition. The dictionary not only brings together some 40,000 names of craftsmen working in metal between 1850 and today, it offers a comprehensive biographical notice for each of them: dates, successive addresses, name of the shop, manufacturer’s specialities, the companies for which he worked, brief description of the maker’s mark, date of creation – that is to say of official registration – and documentary references. The dictionary thus brings together an incredible amount of knowledge, based on the archives of the Paris hallmark office, very rich first-hand documentation, and professional almanacs, in particular the Azur almanacs, supplemented by research at the National Archives. This book is an original working tool and a reference work for professionals and amateurs interested in contemporary goldsmithing and jewellery (since 1850).
